The original Native American name, ascribed to it by the Washoe tribe, was “doa w aga.” This means “edge of lake.” The sounds were mangled and mispronounced by newcomers until they evolved into the name “Tahoe.” Neither name really gives justice to the magnificent natural beauty of this area, situated along the border of California and Nevada.
